Abstract
This study determined the prevalence of hypertension and examined its associated socio-demographic, detention-related, health-related, and jail environmental factors among male persons deprived of liberty in a selected Philippine jail facility. A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed involving 360 respondents selected through proportionate stratified cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire, blood pressure measurements, and anthropometric assessment. Hypertension was classified according to the American Heart Association blood pressure classification based on the participants’ final blood pressure reading. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that 43.1% of the respondents were classified as hypertensive. Significant associations were found between hypertension and age, educational attainment, length of current detention, number of detentions, family history of hypertension, smoking frequency, smoking duration, physical activity, and sleep conditions.
